Addressing a critical workforce shortage

Gulf States Shipbuilders Consortium

The Gulf States Shipbuilders Consortium (GSSC) was formed to address the workforce challenge of a widespread shortage of skilled labor in the shipbuilding industry across Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. In response, Bond spearheaded a public relations campaign with GSSC to provide both short and long-term solutions by communicating career opportunities in the shipbuilding industry.

Client Goal

The Gulf States Shipbuilders Consortium (GSSC), a coalition of leaders within the regional shipbuilding industry, was formed to address the workforce challenge of a widespread shortage of skilled labor in the shipbuilding industry across Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. In response, Bond mounted a public relations campaign with the main goal to provide both short and long-term solutions by effectively communicating the career opportunities in the shipbuilding industry.

Campaign Approach

Our campaign consisted of a combination of community relations and media relations. In order to address the workforce shortage in the short term, we engaged relevant communities in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama to help spread the message of the opportunities available in the shipbuilding industry. Specifically, we targeted transition offices at military bases, churches, universities, chambers of commerce and recreation groups.

To address the shortage in the long-term and create a sustainable skilled workforce base, we engaged public education leaders and school system officials to get their students to consider a career in shipbuilding. In both community relations cases, we coordinated presentations and talks, where GSSC board members and partners would highlight shipbuilding as a stable and financially viable career.

We conducted aggressive media outreach in each region: Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. Working closely with representatives of the media in print, television and radio, we secured opportunities for GSSC board members and partners to raise awareness of the workforce shortage and educate the respective communities on the advantages of a career in shipbuilding.
